Independent practice · Identity, editorial, type · Leeds, est. 2016

Careful work for people who read the small print.

Ada Fenwick · Principal

The practice

Margin is a two-person practice in Leeds. We make identities, books and typefaces for organisations that would rather be read than looked at. Work arrives as a question and leaves as a system: a grid, a face, and a set of rules thin enough to hold in the head and strict enough to survive whoever inherits them.

Selected plates

Four things we made and can show

Plate I Halftone study, Corn Exchange identity, 2024. Screen ruling held at 45° throughout the applied set.
Plate II Plotted contour, ‘Northing’ specimen, 2025. One curve, eighteen passes, drawn on the studio pen plotter.
Plate III Monogram, drawn from the practice face. The counter is the margin; that is the whole joke.
Plate IV Registration study, Hepworth Editions annual, 2023. Trim, bleed and the one block that carries the year.

Voices

What it is like to be on the other side of it

They sent a grid before they sent a picture, and it turned out to be the right way round. Everything we have made since has fitted it.

Naomi Slattery · Director, Corn Exchange

Margin gave us a typeface and eleven rules. Four years and three marketing managers later, nobody has managed to break them.

Peter Adeyemi · Head of publishing, Hepworth Editions
