The sheet

Nine frames pulled from twelve years of contact sheets. Some became series, most did not. They are laid out here the way they came off the light box.

Bora

42 plates Medium format Galleria Tergeste, 2024

The bora comes down off the plateau at a hundred and fifty kilometres an hour and rearranges everything it touches. I spent four winters on the limestone above Trieste photographing what the wind leaves behind: stripped pavement, bent scrub, a sea that goes white to the horizon.

The Salt Road

Ongoing since 2021 Six locations Book in preparation

Salt is still raked by hand in more places than you would think. This series follows the pans from Sečovlje down the Adriatic and along the North African coast, photographing the last families working them and the geometry they have kept in repair for six hundred years.

Practice

Long looks at small places

I work slowly and I go back. Both of the series here took years rather than trips, and most of what I photograph is within a day of where I live.

I trained as a geologist before I trained as anything else, which is probably why the ground keeps turning up in the work. I shoot medium format on film for the series and digital for commissioned jobs, and I print everything myself in a converted garage in Servola.

Commissioned work is mostly editorial and documentary: reportage for magazines, long-form pieces for NGOs, occasional portraiture when the subject is someone doing something with their hands. I do not shoot weddings, and I am not much use in a studio.
