Northbound

Two slots left this quarter

Web design & development · Leeds

We design and build websites for people who have outgrown their last one.

Northbound is a studio of six. We take on around fourteen projects a year, most of them six to ten weeks from first call to launch, and we look after them long after that. Two of us will work on your project. You will know both their names.

Booking projects from 9 March. Two slots left this quarter.

How a page gets made

Boxes, then hierarchy, then the finished thing.

Scroll. This is the same page at the three points where we would show it to you — and the three points where changing your mind is cheap.

  1. 01 Wireframe Boxes only. We argue about what goes where while it costs nothing.
  2. 02 Structure Your words, at their real sizes. If the hierarchy is wrong you can see it.
  3. 03 Finished Colour, photography, motion. The last thing we add, not the first.

What we do

Four ways to work with us.

Prices are the bands we actually quote in, not a starting-from figure with a catch. We will give you a fixed number in writing before you commit to anything.

01

Marketing site

For a business whose website is the main way people find them, judge them, and decide whether to get in touch.

  • Two-day discovery, with whoever will be updating the site in the room
  • Sitemap, page plan and a content list you can actually fill in
  • Design in the browser, reviewed on real devices
  • Built on your CMS, or on ours
  • Half a day of training and a written handover
Band
£9,000–£18,000
Timeline
6–10 weeks

02

Online shop

For selling forty to four hundred products without hiring a full-time developer to keep it upright.

  • Shopify or WooCommerce, chosen after we have seen your stock
  • Custom theme — no marketplace template underneath
  • Product data migration, including the photography you already own
  • Payments, shipping rules and tax set up and tested
  • Staff handover for the people packing the orders
Band
£14,000–£30,000
Timeline
8–12 weeks

03

Rebuild

For a site that works but is slow, awkward to edit, or five years behind where the business got to.

  • A week of audit first: speed, accessibility, analytics, what people actually click
  • Keep the structure that earns its keep, rewrite the front end
  • Performance and WCAG 2.2 AA pass, with the before and after numbers
  • Redirect map, so nothing you rank for disappears
  • Released in phases if you would rather not hold your breath
Band
£6,000–£14,000
Timeline
4–6 weeks

04

Care plan

For after launch. Hosting, updates, and a person who answers the email rather than a ticket queue.

  • Managed hosting, backups and a staging copy
  • Monthly updates, monitored uptime, quarterly performance report
  • Four hours of changes a month, rolled over for one month
  • Same-working-day response, and a phone number for the day it matters
  • Cancel with a month's notice; you keep everything
Band
£350–£900 a month
Timeline
Ongoing

Selected work

Six we are happy to be judged on.

Every one of these is still live and still looked after by us. Ask and we will put you in touch with any of them.

Filter work by type

Oakfield Joinery

A workshop that had been sending people to a Facebook page. Now the quote form is the busiest thing they own.

Marketing site2025

Halcyon Coffee Roasters

Subscriptions, wholesale accounts and a shop, on one Shopify build the roastery runs themselves.

Online shop2025

Meridian Legal

Eleven years of pages, kept and rewritten. Same URLs, a fifth of the weight, and an editor their team can use.

Rebuild2024

Tern Outdoor

Three hundred products, four sizing systems, one filter that finally makes sense on a phone.

Online shop2024

Bramble Nursery

Opening times, stock lists and a course calendar the office updates in the morning without ringing us.

Marketing site2023

Kestrel Engineering

A 2016 site carrying a 400-part catalogue. Rebuilt in phases over six weeks with nothing taken offline.

Rebuild2023

Process

Ten weeks, and what happens in them.

A marketing site, start to finish. Shops run longer and rebuilds shorter, but the shape does not change: decide, then draw, then build.

  1. Week 1

    Discovery

Two days with you and whoever will be updating the site. We come out with a sitemap, a content list, and a written scope with a fixed price on it. If we are the wrong studio for the job, this is where we say so.

  2. Weeks 2–3

    Structure

Wireframes for every page type, and the real navigation. No colour, no photography, nothing to be polite about. Most of the useful arguments happen here, and they are cheap here.

  3. Weeks 4–6

    Design

Type, colour, photography and motion, designed in the browser and reviewed on a real phone. You get two rounds of changes on each page type, and we tell you when a third would not help.

  4. Weeks 6–9

    Build

Front end, CMS, forms, integrations and content loading, on a staging site you can see from day one. We test on the browsers your analytics say you have, not the ones we like.

  5. Week 10

    Launch, then after

Redirects, analytics, a speed and accessibility pass, and half a day of training. Then thirty days of snagging included, and a care plan if you want one. Either way, you own everything.

Start something

Tell us what you are trying to fix.

A paragraph is plenty. We read everything ourselves, reply within a working day, and send a written proposal with a fixed price about eleven days later.
