# Wine Bar

> Six-page wine bar website template on a candlelit claret ground: a two-room hero that leans towards the room you point at, cream rails down both edges that slide in a menu and a booking drawer, a ruled drinks list you filter by colour, glass or bottle, table plans and a private hire planner.

## Overview

A six-page site for a wine and cocktail bar, built to feel like walking down the steps into a candlelit room. The ground is a deep claret brown, cream is kept for type and for two thin rails down the page edges, and a single candle-vermilion accent marks the wordmark and anything live. The colour comes from the photographs: glasses, candles, brick and people at tables, all in one warm low-light grade. Halfpenny Cellar, a bar in the brick vaults under a former cotton mill in Ancoats, Manchester, is the worked example.

The home page opens with no headline at all: two rooms side by side, the candlelit Vault and the Long Room with its supper table, and a small wordmark on the seam between them. Move towards one and the split leans that way while its name, tonight's hours and how to get a seat rise into view. Choose it and that room takes the whole screen, and every Book button on the site now books that room. The left rail opens the site menu as a full-height drawer of large serif links; the right rail opens the booking drawer.

The List sets the wines, cocktails and small plates as a ruled monospace sheet, numbered like the tracks on a record sleeve, with filters for colour and for glass or bottle and a photograph that changes behind it. Rooms lists the places to sit in each room; pick one to see it; Events is a dated programme you can filter and open; Private Hire is a gapped photo mosaic over a planner that works out capacity and minimum spend; Visit has hours per room, today marked, and a real street map with routed walks from the station and the tram.

Making it yours is mostly photographs and copy. The palette is a handful of tokens in one block, opening hours and supper sittings live in one config object at the top of the script, and the wines, tables, events and rooms are plain HTML with data attributes.

## Features

- Two-room hero: two full-height photographs that lean towards the room under the pointer, reveal its name, tonight's hours and how to get in, and commit to one room on click, tap or Enter
- Cream edge rails on every page, one opening the site menu and one the booking drawer, with the live opening status written down the left rail
- Booking drawer that remembers the room chosen anywhere on the site, offers only the times that room is open, limits party size per room and confirms the request in place
- Phone navigation: the rails fold into a slim cream top bar with the wordmark, Menu and Book, opening the same drawers full width
- The List: wines, cocktails, low and no, and small plates as a ruled monospace sheet numbered like a record sleeve, filtered by colour and by glass or bottle, with a photograph that changes behind it
- A list of places to sit in each room, each showing its photograph, seats and a Book button that fills in the drawer
- Events programme by month with kind filters, expanding listings, seats left and a Book a place button
- Private hire planner: room, format, headcount and night drive a capacity bar, the matching photograph and the minimum spend
- Gapped full-bleed photo mosaics with a small address block set into the first tile
- Hours per room with today highlighted, and a real street map (MapLibre on OpenFreeMap) with routed walks from Piccadilly and the tram
- Six plain HTML pages with a cross-document crossfade; complete without JavaScript and under reduced motion

## Use Cases

- Wine bars and natural wine bars with a list by the glass and bottle
- Cocktail lounges, hotel bars and listening bars with more than one room
- Small restaurants, supper clubs and cellar bars with a private dining room
- Bottle shops and cellar doors that run tastings
- Learning pattern: a split hero that follows the pointer and a choice that carries into a booking form on every page

## Questions about this template

### Which kinds of bar or restaurant does this wine bar template suit?

Any place with a list and more than one way to sit. A natural wine bar, a cocktail lounge, a hotel bar, a listening bar or a small restaurant with a private dining room all fit by renaming the two rooms and changing the photographs. The two-room hero can just as well be bar and dining room, upstairs and downstairs, or shop and tasting room.

### Can I use it for a venue with only one room, or with three?

Yes. With one room, delete the second hero panel and its chapter on the Rooms page and the hero becomes a single full-width photograph with the wordmark. With three, add a third panel with the same attributes; the split leans the same way, and the booking drawer takes another radio option and an entry in the rooms config.

### How do I change the wine list and the drink filters?

Each wine is one list item carrying its colour, whether it is sold by the glass and which photograph to show. Edit the name, maker, region and the two prices in place. The colour buttons map to the colour groups, so adding a colour such as sweet or fortified means one more button, one more group and one more dot colour in the tokens.

### Does the booking drawer take real reservations?

No. The booking drawer and the private hire enquiry are static front ends with no backend. The booking form collects the room, date, time, party size, name, email and a note; the hire form collects room, format, guests, night, name, email, date and occasion. Point them at Formspree, Netlify Forms, your reservations system such as OpenTable or ResDiary, or your CRM; the confirmation shown is not a held table.

### How do I set our opening hours and supper sittings?

They live in one config object at the top of the script: opening hours for the bar room per day, sitting times for the dining room per day, party sizes per room and the booking blurb. The rail status, tonight strip, hours table, booking times and closed-day messages all read from it, so changing the hours once updates every page.

### Can I swap the photographs and keep the candlelit look?

Yes. The images are baked from a manifest with one gentle grade, and the README lists every slot with its size and crop. Warm, low-light photographs of your own room work best because the ground and the text scrims are tuned for dark pictures. Replace the files with the same names, or edit the manifest and run the bake command.

## Vibe-Code Ready Setup

This template includes `START-HERE-AI.md`, a product-specific copy-paste setup prompt for Cursor, Claude Code, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, and other coding assistants. It tells the assistant to inspect the existing stack, integrate the supplied files, preserve the design, scope selectors, retain accessibility and responsive behaviour, add framework-appropriate GSAP cleanup, and report what it tested.

[How AI-assisted setup works](https://gsapvault.com/vibe-coding)

## How It Works

### The two-room hero

Each room is a link to its section of the Rooms page with a button laid over it. With a mouse, the split leans towards the side the pointer is on and the other room dims, and the wordmark travels along the seam. Clicking a room, tapping it or pressing Enter on its button opens that room full width with its details and booking button; Back to both rooms returns the split. On phones the rooms stack and each shows its details from the start.

### Rails and drawers

The two rails are buttons that open a full-height drawer from their own side. While a drawer is open the page behind is inert and smooth scrolling pauses, focus moves into the drawer and stays there, and Escape, the Close button or a click on the dimmed page closes it and returns focus to the rail. Without JavaScript the rails become links and the drawers sit at the foot of each page as ordinary sections.

### A room choice that carries through the site

Choosing a room on the home page, a table in a room's list or an event on the programme sets up the booking drawer before it opens: the room, the date, the party size and a note. The chosen room is kept for the browsing session, so the right rail reads Book the Vault or Book the Long Room on every page. Opening hours and supper sittings come from one config object, so closed days are explained instead of offered.

### The List

Wines are grouped by colour on side A and the cocktails, low and no and plates on side B. The serve switch hides the glass or the bottle column and drops bottle-only wines when you choose by the glass; the colour buttons combine, and the rows close up smoothly with Flip as they filter. A message and a reset appear if nothing matches. Hovering a row brings up its photograph in the sticky column beside the list.

### Plans, programme and planner

Each room's places to sit are a plain list of buttons, so adding a table is one more list item. Events are plain list items with a kind, a date and their details, filtered by kind. The hire planner reads each room's seated and standing capacity and minimum spend from data attributes and warns when the headcount is over the limit.

### Fallbacks

Every page is complete without JavaScript: the hero rooms are links, the drawers are sections, the list shows both prices and the map is a link to OpenStreetMap. Under reduced motion nothing slides or drifts, the hero split stays even and the room details simply appear. The map loads only as its section approaches.

## Documentation

How this template works and how it goes into a page. The reference you use once you own the files (worked examples, events, the programmatic API, the class list) ships with the download.

### Quick Start

1. Unzip and open `index.html` in a browser, or upload the folder to any static host. There is no build step.
2. The six pages are `index.html`, `menu.html`, `rooms.html`, `events.html`, `private-hire.html` and `visit.html`. Each loads `assets/style.css` and `assets/script.js` and works on its own.
3. Edit the copy in the HTML, the hours and sittings in the `CONFIG` block at the top of `assets/script.js`, and the colour tokens at the top of `assets/style.css`.
4. Replace the photographs in `assets/img/` with your own at the same file names and similar proportions (see Images and Credits).

### Using It With Your Own Design

Every interactive part is found by a `data-` hook (`data-duo`, `data-drawer`, `data-book`, `data-sheet`, `data-plan`, `data-programme`, `data-hire`, `data-routes`) and its initialiser returns early when the hook is missing, so you can delete a section, or a whole page, without breaking the rest. To lift one part into another site, copy its markup, the matching block of `assets/style.css` (each is headed by a comment) and its `init` function from `assets/script.js`.

The rails, both drawers and the footer are ordinary markup repeated on each page. Pages are plain links with a CSS cross-document crossfade (`@view-transition { navigation: auto; }`), so there is no router to configure. If you add or rename a page, update the drawer list and the footer list on every page.

### Pages and Configuration

#### `CONFIG` in `assets/script.js`

- `rooms.vault.hours`: opening and closing hour per weekday (0 is Sunday, `null` closed; past midnight is written past 24, so 25 is 1am). The left rail's "Open now" line, the tonight strip, the Visit page's today row and the booking drawer's time list all read it.
- `rooms.long.sittings`: supper sitting times per weekday as `[hour, minute]`, and `sittingNote` for days with a different event (a Sunday lunch, a Tuesday tasting).
- `party`: the smallest and largest party each room books.
- `title`, `blurb`, `door`, `link`: the text and destination shown when a room is chosen on the home page.
- `storageKey`: the session storage key that remembers the chosen room across pages.

The hours tables in the footer and on the Visit page are HTML; update them to match.

#### Rails and drawers (every page)

The left rail opens `#drawer-menu`, the right rail `#drawer-book`. Each rail is a `<button>` with `aria-controls`, plus a plain link (`.rail__link`) used when JavaScript is off. Any other button with `data-drawer-open="book"` opens the booking drawer; add `data-book-room="vault"` (and optionally `data-book-party`, `data-book-table`) to preset it, or `data-event-book` with `data-event-date`, `data-event-time` and `data-event-name` to book an event. Below 760px the rails become one slim top bar.

#### Home (`index.html`)

The hero (`data-duo`) holds two `.duo__room` panels, each a photograph, a details block, a link for no-JS visitors and a `data-room-choose` button. The room names in `data-room` must match the keys in `CONFIG.rooms`. The mosaic is five `figure.tile` elements in a CSS grid (`grid-template-areas` in `.mosaic`); the first carries the address block.

#### The List (`menu.html`)

Wines are `li.track` items inside a `[data-colour-group]` per colour. Each has `data-colour` (matching a colour button's `data-colour-toggle`), `data-glass="yes|no"` and `data-photo` (the key of a photograph in `.sheet__photos`). Cocktails, low and no, and plates are single-price rows on side B. To add a colour, add a button, a group and a `--wine-*` dot token.

#### Rooms (`rooms.html`)

Each room is a `section.chapter` with a photograph, text, a spec list and a list of places to sit (`data-plan`). Each place is a `button.plan__table` in `ul.plan__list`; each button's `data-table-*` attributes hold the name, seats, note and photograph shown in the card. A table with `data-table="standing"` swaps the booking button for a private hire link.

#### Events (`events.html`)

Each event is an `li.listing` with `data-kind` (`tasting`, `supper`, `records`, `class`), grouped by month in `[data-month]`. The kind buttons filter by `data-kind-toggle`. Linking to `events.html#<id>` opens that listing.

#### Private Hire (`private-hire.html`)

The planner reads each room radio's `data-seated`, `data-standing`, `data-spend` ("weekday, weekend" minimum spend in pounds) and `data-img`. Change those to your rooms and prices.

#### Visit (`visit.html`)

The map pin, stops and walking routes are the `MAP` object above `buildRoutes` in `assets/script.js`. Routes are `[lng, lat]` arrays; get real ones from the public OSRM foot router (`https://routing.openstreetmap.de/routed-foot/route/v1/foot/<lng,lat>;<lng,lat>?overview=full&geometries=geojson`) and keep the minutes and distances in the copy in step with them. The map style is OpenFreeMap's `dark`.

### Palette

| Token | Value | Use |
|---|---|---|
| `--ground` | #2A1517 | Claret-brown ground on every page |
| `--ground-deep` | #1C0D0F | Drawers and footer |
| `--surface` | #341B1D | Form fields and the hire summary |
| `--cream` | #EFE6D2 | Text and the two rails, never a ground |
| `--accent` | #F2643A | Candle vermilion: wordmark, live dot, selected states, buttons, map route |
| `--accent-deep` | #A8341A | The accent where it sits on the cream rails |

Cream on the ground measures 13.9:1, the dimmest text (cream at .58) 5.4:1, the accent on the ground 5.5:1. The accent fails on cream (2.5:1), which is why the rails use `--accent-deep`. Measured pairs and limits are recorded in the `:root` comment.

#### Palettes

| Palette | `data-palette` | Ground | Accent | Display face |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claret (default) | none | #2A1517 | #F2643A | Bellefair |
| Midnight | `midnight` | #0F1A2B | #F2643A | Bellefair |

Midnight changes only the three grounds; cream, the accent and every alpha stay, so contrast holds at the same levels (cream 14.1:1, the dimmest text 5.2:1 or better). To use it, add `data-palette="midnight"` to the `<html>` tag of every page, or copy the values from the `:root[data-palette="midnight"]` block into `:root` and delete the block. The colour switcher in the online demo is preview chrome and is not part of the download.

### Accessibility and Fallbacks

- The hero rooms are real buttons: focus leans the split, Enter commits and moves focus to the room's heading. On touch the rooms stack with their details showing and a tap commits.
- The drawers are modal dialogs: focus moves in and is kept there, the page behind is inert, Escape, Close or a click outside closes them and focus returns to the rail. A drawer opened by mouse or touch focuses the drawer itself, so no focus ring appears.
- Focus rings show for keyboard use only (`:focus-visible`).
- Reduced motion: no smooth scroll, no slides, no photo drift and no page crossfade; the hero split stays even and the details appear without movement.
- Without JavaScript: the hero rooms are links to the Rooms page, the rails are links to the drawers, which sit at the foot of each page as ordinary sections, the drinks list shows both prices and the map is a link to OpenStreetMap.
- If the GSAP CDN is blocked, the page drops its reveal gate and reads as a plain document.
- The booking and hire forms are static front ends: they check the name and email and confirm in place, but send nothing. Connect them to Formspree, Netlify Forms, your reservations system or your CRM.

### Dependencies

- GSAP 3.15.0 with ScrollTrigger on every page and Flip on `menu.html` (works with 3.12+).
- Lenis 1.3.17 for smooth scrolling (optional; add `?smooth=off` or `data-smooth="off"` on `<html>` to switch it off). The drawers carry `data-lenis-prevent` because smooth scrolling is stopped while they are open.
- MapLibre GL 4.7.1 with OpenFreeMap tiles on the Visit page (no API key; keep the OpenStreetMap attribution). It loads only when the map nears the viewport; the URLs are `MAPLIBRE_JS` and `MAPLIBRE_CSS` in `assets/script.js`.
- Bellefair, Onest and Red Hat Mono, self-hosted in `assets/fonts/`.

### Fonts

The three families are self-hosted as the Latin subsets Google Fonts serves, declared by the `@font-face` rules at the top of `assets/style.css`. Each page preloads Bellefair and Onest, which paint above the fold; the List and Visit pages also preload Red Hat Mono. Licence: SIL Open Font License 1.1, full text in `assets/fonts/OFL.txt` (Bellefair: The Bellefair Project Authors; Onest: The Onest Project Authors; Red Hat Mono: The Red Hat Project Authors).

To swap a face, put your `.woff2` in `assets/fonts/`, point its `@font-face` rule and the `--font-*` token at it, and change the preloads in each page's `<head>`.

### Images and Credits

Photographs are bundled as graded, resized WebP derivatives in `assets/img/`. `assets/img-manifest.json` lists each output, its source, crop and grade (a gentle desaturation, with brightness eased per image so the set reads as one candlelit room). Re-bake with `bun scripts/build-template-assets.ts wine-bar-template --force` from the GSAP Vault repository, or replace a file in `assets/img/` with your own at the same name and size. Files ending `-640` or `-800` are smaller copies for phones in a `srcset`; replace them too.
