## Overview

A pie menu, the marking-menu pattern from 3D tools and game weapon wheels, made product-grade. One button opens a ring of four to eight actions drawn as annular sectors in a single inline SVG, built from a plain list so the actions live in HTML. The ring sweeps out from the side the pointer came from, and one accent wedge follows the pointer's angle, leaning toward it and snapping to the nearest sector, always turning the short way across 0 and 360 degrees. An item with a nested list grows a second, outer ring of children after a short dwell, and the wedge carries out into it. Three input models share one hit test: click to open and click an action, press on the button and drag toward an action to pick it in one motion, or use the keyboard menu-button pattern with arrow keys, shortcut letters and Escape. A pick folds the ring back into the button, which shows a check and the action's name for a moment. Vanilla JavaScript and GSAP core, light and dark themes.

## Features

- A donut of 4 to 8 annular sectors generated in one SVG from a <ul>; nested <ul> elements become an outer child ring
- One accent wedge that follows the pointer and always turns the short way round, never spinning through 340 degrees to cover 20
- The wedge leans toward the pointer inside a sector, snaps to the nearest one, morphs into the child ring and fades out over the centre
- Angular stagger on open: sectors scale out from the hub in sequence starting from the pointer side, and fold back faster on close
- Marking gesture: press the button, drag toward an action and release to select; an 8px threshold tells it from a click; release over the centre cancels
- Child ring after a 250ms dwell, or ArrowRight or Enter on the parent; ArrowLeft or Escape closes it
- The centre shows the highlighted action's name and shortcut letter, or Cancel
- Menu-button ARIA: aria-haspopup, aria-expanded, role="menu", role="menuitem", aria-keyshortcuts, and a polite status message on pick
- In-place confirmation: the trigger widens into a check and the action's name, then resets
- Radii scale down at open so the ring and any child ring keep 12px from every viewport edge on a phone
- Reduced motion: no sweep and no wedge travel, the wedge jumps straight to its slice and everything else fades
- PieMenu.mount() returns open, close, highlight, destroy and the item tree; piemenu:select carries id, label and path

## Use Cases

- Quick actions on a canvas, whiteboard or design tool
- A create menu in a notes, docs or project app
- Map, media or editor tools where the pointer is already in the work area
- Touch-first action wheels on tablets and phones

## Vibe-Code Ready Setup

This UI element includes `START-HERE-AI.md`, a product-specific copy-paste setup prompt for Cursor, Claude Code, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, and other coding assistants. It tells the assistant to inspect the existing stack, integrate the supplied files, preserve the design, scope selectors, retain accessibility and responsive behaviour, add framework-appropriate GSAP cleanup, and report what it tested.

## How It Works

### A ring built from a list

On mount the script reads the list's <li> children: their text is the label, data-icon names a sprite symbol, data-shortcut a letter, and a nested <ul> holds children. It draws each sector as an SVG path with two arcs, inset so neighbours keep a constant 2px gap, and places a real role="menuitem" button over each one for focus and the accessible name. At open it measures the room around the button and scales every radius so the rings fit the viewport.

### The wedge

One accent slice is drawn once and turned about the ring's centre, always the short way: crossing from the last slice to the first is a small step forward, not a full lap back. It reshapes itself as it moves out into a child ring and back. Under reduced motion it jumps straight to its slice with no travel at all.

### Click, gesture and keyboard

Pointer input is hit-tested by distance and angle from the button's centre, not by element, so the same function serves a click, a hover and a gesture. A press on the button binds to the window; once the pointer travels 8px the ring opens toward it and release selects whatever the angle points at, at any distance. The keyboard follows the menu-button pattern: arrows walk the ring and wrap, ArrowRight enters a child ring, Escape backs out one level at a time and returns focus to the button.

### Selecting

The chosen sector flashes, the sectors fold back into the button in reverse order, and piemenu:select fires with the item's id, label and path. The trigger then widens into a check and the action's name, read out through a status region, and returns to its icon after 1.2 seconds.

## Documentation

How this UI element works and how it goes into a page. The reference you use once you own the files (worked examples, events, the programmatic API, the class list) ships with the download.

### What's Included

- `index.html`: the demo page and the markup to copy
- `assets/style.css`: component styles, plain CSS custom properties for colours
- `assets/script.js`: readable, commented source with an `onReady` guard; one global, `window.PieMenu`

What the component does:

- **A ring built from your HTML.** Each `<li>` becomes a sector in one inline SVG, 4 to 8 of them; a nested `<ul>` becomes an outer ring of children
- **One accent wedge** turned with `gsap.quickTo`, always the short way across 0 and 360 degrees. It leans toward the pointer inside a sector, snaps to the nearest one, reaches into a child ring and fades out over the centre
- **Sweep on open.** Sectors scale out from the centre in sequence, starting on the side the pointer came from; they fold back faster on close
- **Marking gesture.** Press the button, drag toward an action, release: one motion, no second click
- **The centre reads back** the highlighted action's name and shortcut letter, or "Cancel"
- **In-place confirmation.** After a pick the button widens into a check and the action's name, then resets
- **Fits a phone.** Radii scale down at open so the ring keeps 12px from every viewport edge
- Menu-button ARIA: `aria-haspopup="menu"`, `aria-expanded`, `role="menu"`, `role="menuitem"`, `aria-keyshortcuts`

### Quick Start

**1. Add to your `<head>`:**

**2. Add before the closing `</body>` tag:**

**3. Copy the component markup from `index.html` into your page:**

_Code snippet omitted: it ships with the download._

Every `[data-pie-menu]` on the page mounts on load. You edit the actions in the list, not in JavaScript:

| On each `<li>` | What it is |
|----------------|-----------|
| text | The label, shown in the centre and used as the accessible name |
| `data-id` | The id sent with `piemenu:select` (defaults to the label, slugified) |
| `data-icon` | The id of a 16px symbol in the SVG sprite at the top of `index.html` |
| `data-shortcut` | One letter: shown in the centre, and pressing it picks the item while the menu has focus |
| nested `<ul>` | Child items, drawn as an outer ring centred on the parent. Keep it to 2 to 4 |

The script adds the roles, ids, `aria-controls` and the per-item `<button role="menuitem">` itself. Copy the sprite symbols you use, or point `data-icon` at your own symbols on the same 16px grid.

Listen for the pick:

`piemenu:open` and `piemenu:close` fire as well. All three bubble.

To mount markup added later, or to pass options in code:

The toolbar, the hint line and the centring `.stage-*` wrappers in `index.html` are demo furniture, not part of the component; leave them behind. Place `.pie-menu` wherever the button belongs; the ring is drawn around its centre and overflows it, so keep it out of an `overflow: hidden` parent.

### Settings

| Attribute / option | Default | What it does |
|--------------------|---------|--------------|
| `data-radius` / `radius` | `132` | Outer radius of the main ring in px. The centre and the child ring scale with it |
| `data-dwell` / `dwell` | `250` | Milliseconds a parent must stay highlighted under the pointer before its child ring opens |
| `data-confirm` / `confirm` | `1200` | Milliseconds the button shows the picked action; `0` turns the confirmation off |

### The gesture

A pie menu is fast because selection is by **direction**, not by target. Press on the button and start moving: after 8px the ring opens, sweeping out toward the pointer, and the wedge already points where you are heading. Release and the action in that direction is picked, however far past the ring the pointer has gone. Come back over the centre and release to cancel. If you release on an item with children, its child ring opens and the menu stays open for a click. Practised users stop looking: a flick down-left is always the same action.

A plain click (no 8px travel) opens the ring and leaves it open; then a click on a sector picks it, and a click on the centre or anywhere outside the ring cancels. On touch, tap-tap and press-drag-release both work; the button sets `touch-action: none` so a drag is never taken as a scroll.

### Keyboard & Accessibility

| Key | What it does |
|-----|--------------|
| `Enter` / `Space` / `ArrowDown` | On the button: opens and focuses the first action |
| `ArrowUp` | On the button: opens and focuses the last action |
| `ArrowDown` / `ArrowUp` | Next / previous action round the ring, wrapping (clockwise / anticlockwise) |
| `ArrowRight` | On an item with children: opens its ring and focuses the first child. Otherwise next action |
| `ArrowLeft` | In a child ring: closes it and returns to the parent. Otherwise previous action |
| `Home` / `End` | First / last action in the current ring |
| `Enter` / `Space` on an action | Picks it, or opens its child ring |
| A shortcut letter | Picks the matching action in the current ring |
| `Escape` | Closes a child ring first; then closes the menu and returns focus to the button |
| `Tab` | Closes the menu and lets focus move on |

- Roles: the button carries `aria-haspopup="menu"`, `aria-expanded` and `aria-controls`; the list is `role="menu"` labelled by the button; every `<li>` is `role="none"` and holds a `<button role="menuitem">` named by its label. A parent item has `aria-haspopup="menu"` and `aria-expanded`, and its nested list is a `role="menu"` named after it.
- The button is the only tab stop; focus moves between actions with the arrow keys. The accent wedge and the centre label show which action has focus, and they follow focus exactly as they follow the pointer.
- After a pick, the action's name is announced through a polite `role="status"` region, and focus returns to the button if it was in the menu.
- The SVG ring and the centre are `aria-hidden`; the menu items carry the semantics. The list is `hidden` while closed.
- `prefers-reduced-motion`: no sweep, no folding and no wedge tween. The ring fades in and out, and the wedge is set directly with `gsap.quickSetter`.

### How It Works

**Drawing the ring.** Each sector is a path of two arcs between two angles (0 at the top, clockwise). The edges are inset by `asin(gap / 2r)` at each radius, so the gap between neighbours stays 2px from the inside edge to the outside instead of tapering. The real menu items sit over the sectors as transparent buttons that take no pointer input; the pointer is handled by angle.

**One hit test for every input.** The pointer's distance and angle from the button's centre decide the item: inside the inner radius is the centre (cancel); past the main ring, inside a child ring's span, is a child. A click must land on a sector; a gesture accepts any distance. Gesture listeners are bound to `window` for the life of the press, so nothing is lost when the pointer leaves the button or the ring is drawn on top of it.

**The wedge never spins the long way.** The script keeps an unwrapped rotation and adds the signed shortest difference to each new target (`((b - a) % 360 + 540) % 360 - 180`), so the `gsap.quickTo` tween always turns at most 180 degrees. The wedge's radii and span are tweened when it moves between the main ring and a child ring, which is how it reaches outward instead of jumping.

**Fitting the viewport.** At open the script samples points round the main ring and along each child ring's arc, compares them with the room on each side of the button, and scales every radius by the tightest ratio. A button near an edge or on a 390px phone gets a smaller ring, never a clipped one. It re-measures on resize.

### Themes

The component reads its colours from custom properties set per theme on an ancestor:

_Code snippet omitted: it ships with the download._

Two values ship: `dark` (the demo default) and `light`. The `?variant=light` URL parameter and the demo toggle only set that attribute. The tokens the component uses:

`--raised`, `--hover`, `--ink`, `--ink-2`, `--ink-3`, `--line`, `--line-strong`, `--accent`, `--accent-hover`, `--accent-ink`, `--shadow`, `--shadow-fab`, `--ring-shadow`, `--font`

To fit your brand, re-value `--accent` (the button, the wedge and the focus ring) and `--accent-hover` in both blocks in `assets/style.css`, and check `--accent-ink` keeps 3:1 against it for the icons. The `--ground` tokens colour the demo page only.

### Customisation

- Ring size: `data-radius`; the centre is about 40% of it and the child ring sits 8px outside it.
- Gap between sectors, child sector width, how far the wedge leans toward the pointer: `PIE_GAP`, `PIE_CHILD_SPAN` and `PIE_LEAN` at the top of `assets/script.js`.
- Timings and eases: the timelines in `open()`, `close()`, `openSub()` and `confirm()`, and the `gsap.quickTo` duration for the wedge.
- Centre text: `.pie-menu__hub-label` and `.pie-menu__hub-key` in `assets/style.css`.
